Today's video is a quick phone tour of the rare plants, huge palms and exciting succulents in the arid area at Ventnor Botanic Garden, ‘Britain’s Hottest Garden’ during a family day out to the Isle of Wight! A special microclimate within an already privileged area, these exotic and subtropical plants are sheltered from the worst weather, see a lot of sun and are thriving in a way that’s just mind blowing for the U.K.! I take you through the Australian planting (towering Eucalyptus gums and lush tree ferns), the subtropical palm paradise with Phoenix canariensis date palms, ancient Trachycarpus windmill palms and gnarly old Cordylines then stop off at the Mediterranean drought-tolerant garden with so many majestic palms and drifts of beautiful flowers. Passing through the long border and Echium forest, we then reach the arid area, an incredible display of desert plants, towering Washingtonia palms, rows of pristine date palms, spiky puyas, monstrous Jubaea chilensis and even a rare flowering Agave! What a place!
