I recently performed a quick fire alarm test with my system. The old batteries I used came from an APC UPS battery backup that I replaced with new ones. Although the old batteries were still functional, they no longer held charge for very long but they were enough to clear the battery trouble on the system and to prevent the date and time from being lost each time the power was lost.
