When artists balance confidence with doubt, they reveal the deep complexities of the human experience. Such is the case with the empowering music of Enitan Adepitan, aka ENNY. The South London singer radiates a personal authority, but she’s unafraid to ponder life’s more profound issues. Take “Peng Black Girls.” With a nonchalant keyboard motif driving it, the 2020 breakout hit repeats the lyric, “I think I need some time away.” Meaning, get out of my face, I’m doing me today. It’s a perfect track for your “chill” playlist, and a great spin on a sunny afternoon off. On the other hand, the song is an unabashed affirmation of Black female individualism. “Black women are beautiful. They don’t get told that enough,” the singer/rapper once said about the song’s creation. That refrain takes on a different meaning when its key racial undertones are considered. ENNY believes in herself, even when she expresses that the world’s innumerable inequities exhaust her. Last July, we initiated the singer into our DSCVR program. “She’s got bags of swag,” noted one commenter about her “I Want” performance. At the time, her ‘Under 25’ had just dropped. Months passed, and we kept coming back to it. So when we chose the participants for DSCVR Artists to Watch 2022, the choice was clear: getting ENNY back in the studio is a dream fulfilled.
