Meteorologist Grant Skinner gives an update on the tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin. The News 5 First Alert Storm Team is tracking Hurricane Beryl. The storm made landfall just northeast of Tulum on the Yucatan peninsula as a category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds Friday morning. The storm has weakened since landfall and is now a tropical storm with max winds at 70 mph. Although it has weakened since landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula, the storm is expected to strengthen in the the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. A weakness in an upper-level ridge currently protecting the Northern Gulf Coast is expected to allow Beryl to curve to the northwest. Model guidance continues to suggest the storm will track towards either the Northern Mexico or Texas Gulf Coast. The exact final landfalling location and strength is still a bit uncertain. This is dependent on how long it sits over the Gulf waters, and how much interaction with wind shear it has.
