How to make a beer mug on the lathe with maple and walnut woods. Making a wood beer mug is a simple woodworking project that can be done in a couple of days. You will need a tablesaw or some way to cut up the squares before clamping and gluing up the blanks. Although not necessary I set my bandsaw table to 45° and cut off the four corners. This gives me a head start on rounding over on the lathe and makes the turning process easier. Once the outside shape is turned I will then use a large forstner bit mounded in a drill chuck on the tailstock of my lathe and bore out the center. This is much faster and easier than hollowing out by hand and makes for a nice smooth bottom. Next I’ll cut the handle out on the bandsaw and do some final shaping with my spindle sander and round over any edges. The handle is glued on with a 5-minute epoxy. The inside of the wood beer mug is then coated with a thick slow setting epoxy which will make it water proof. Be sure to use an epoxy that you know is food safe once fully cured.
