During the time of Julius Caesar, and later his successor Caesar Augustus, it seemed that the expansion of the Roman Empire could not be stopped. The Roman Empire occupied region after region until they crossed the Rhine River and met a worthy opponent. In the forests beyond the river, there was a battle that was an embarrassment to the Roman Empire and turned the course of history. Within four days, the Germanic tribes destroyed three Roman legions and stopped the advance of Rome east of the Rhine River. And the heads of Roman legionnaires and centurions were hung on trees by the barbarians as a sign of victory over the Roman army. In history, this battle went down as the most crushing defeat of Rome.
